I've had a nagging urge to paint refineries for about twenty years. I still haven't gotten it quite right. I get close sometimes. Like the one pictured below. This was my first attempt at encaustic painting. The light and the blur are close to what I see in my head.
Here's a previous version. Done in acrylics on gallery-wrapped canvas.
My vision has more lights. More contrast. More detail. More depth. What I'm going for is the beauty of the lights and how impressive the engineering is.
Sometimes I end up going the opposite way and it works out well. Even though my vision is a nighttime one I find the refineries to be impressive at all times of day. This is a mixed media painting (pencil, ink, gouache, acrylic and paper) on wood.
